GramInn Wayanad Hosts First-Ever Ormakkoru Ponnonam for Mampetta Elders

GramInn Wayanad, in collaboration with Don Bosco College, Mampetta, TDR Syndicate Ongallur, Ambat Kudumba Yogam Edappally, and Variyath Buildware Ernakulam, organised the first-ever Ormakkoru Ponnonam for the elders of Mampetta on Uthradam, 25 August 2026. The programme, held in the college auditorium, brought together more than 150 participants for a day of cultural celebration and community solidarity.
The event featured traditional Onam activities including games, songs, dance performances, and Thiruvathira. An Onasadhya was served to all attendees, and gifts were distributed to the elders as a gesture of respect and appreciation. Volunteers coordinated the programme logistics and activities to ensure a warm, dignified experience for every guest.

GramInn believes cultural inclusion and social connection are vital to elders’ mental health. The Ormakkoru Ponnonam combined joyful celebration with targeted wellbeing support: intergenerational activities to reduce isolation, volunteer companionship, and quiet spaces for rest and conversation. Care teams observed participants for signs of distress and shared information on local counselling and health services. By integrating cultural dignity with emotional care, the programme aimed to strengthen belonging, self-worth and resilience among older residents.

Reena Varghese, Director of GramInn Wayanad, said: “This programme reflects GramInn’s commitment to inclusive community development. By honouring our elders through cultural celebration and shared meals, we reaffirm our responsibility to preserve dignity, tradition and social cohesion in Mampetta.”

The successful Ormakkoru Ponnonam marks a milestone in GramInn’s outreach efforts. GramInn will continue to prioritise elders’ mental health through regular social programmes, referral pathways to health services, volunteer-led companionship initiatives and culturally appropriate activities that promote inclusion and wellbeing.
