Gathering under the HEAL project, senior citizens of Ward 7 at Ammani, Panamaram Panchayat, rediscovered the vibrancy of their youth through the “Vaikunnera Varthamanam” interactive session on April 17. Hosted at Ammani, the event fostered mental wellbeing by encouraging elders to chat, dance, and sing, filling the air with infectious smiles and nostalgia.
Animated by field coordinator Biju Thomas and a dedicated team of volunteers—including Ann Susan, Shahans, Aleena, and others—the program welcomed over 30 participants from the local community. “It’s incredible to see our elders light up like this,” said Biju Thomas. “These sessions remind them of joyful times while building emotional resilience amid daily challenges.”
The dynamic activities transported attendees back decades: group dances to classic Malayalam folk tunes, impromptu singing circles, and lively storytelling rounds. One participant, 68-year-old Shantha Amma, shared, “I haven’t danced like this since my wedding! It feels like the years melted away.” Laughter echoed as seniors shared life anecdotes, forging new bonds and smoothing away worries.
Organized as part of GramInn NGO’s HEAL project in Panamaram—which focuses on holistic elderly care, mental health support, and community integration—the event underscores the power of simple interactions in promoting wellbeing. Volunteers noted the visible glow on participants’ faces, with many requesting monthly repeats.
This initiative aligns with broader efforts in Wayanad to empower tribal and rural seniors, blending fun with therapeutic engagement. As Biju Thomas wrapped up, “Events like these heal hearts and strengthen our community fabric.”
